i have searched just about everywhere i can and i haven’t gotten any information. all the information is on certain races of immigrants, and ellis island. can someone please tell me how they retained their culture, yet blended into american society?
They all learned and adapted to the customs and ways of American society. Meanwhile, retaining their own personal heritage behind closed doors…. it was behind these closed doors they spoke in the native language (never to be heard in public because to do so would be disrespectful to the country that welcomed them in). All these Nationalities, not unlike the American Indian, began speaking to their children of their homelands and ancestors.
How did immigrants retain their culture, yet blend into american society in the 1800′s?

Use this, The Irish famine, Diaspora multi migration which they moved all over the world including America. Now when they got there they were the minority so they clung together and entertained themselves in there own surroundings to give themselves some sense of security as the locals made fun of them and beat them and drew pictures in media to make them look like animals and ugly people. But these people had been through some tough times and they fought back and become established more so in the drug trades and boot legging industry with the odd few being terrified of. As other arrivals like the Italians the tough joined forces and then they were even meaner. It was the ones who had guts that put them on the map in USA. Just like the Chinese where they joined together and then made china town to make the place feel like there own. Now china town is everywhere. But getting back to the Irish, they used music, comedy, character like and poetry just anyone would to promote there culture. They like many joined other people in the outcast stream, minority groups like gayswoman’ss rights andunderprivilegedd peoples to joinstrengthh in numbers to make there stand and people died in themidst’ss of it all. Irish people started to gain respect of others and then made there waythoughtt the ranks to gain humans rights as a american citizen.

They maintained their culture within their own homes. By speaking their native language, eating traditional foods, and holding traditional customs and values. They mainstreamed into society by learning the language and culture of American society. I hope this is helpful.
